Who Steals Cars?
There are three main categories that the
majority of auto thieves fall into.
- Teenagers-
At least 60% of auto thefts are committed by youth, a majority under the age of 16 years.
In addition, it has been reported that the reasons are for joy riding and thrills rather
than for monetary reasons.
- Auto Strippers-
a second group is those who steal vehicles for their parts. Such items - radios, tape
decks, hub caps, etc. - are then sold. It is seldom that a car is recovered in one piece
if stripping is the motive of the thief. Burning sometimes follows stripping.
- Professionals-
a growing number of thefts nationwide are being accomplished by those referred to as
professionals. They steal a vehicle for resale. Normally, expensive models are stolen and
thieves find their targets by prowling parking lots and streets in search of them. This
type of theft is not common in Jacksonville, but precautions should be taken especially
when visiting larger cities.

Ways to prevent theft...
The auto industry has been developing new locking mechanisms and auto-theft protection
devices to assist in prevention of automobile and other vehicle thefts. However, the
citizens have been victimized most because of being lax in leaving their vehicles unlocked
and, at times, their keys in the ignition.
- Lock all doors, roll up the windows.
- Never leave keys in the vehicle.
- Park in well lighted areas where the police patrol.
- Avoid parking vehicle in public areas for long periods of time.
- If possible, choose parking lots with attendants..Don't leave the ticket in the vehicle.
- Consider security devices (alarms, etc)

When you are
parking remember:
- Never leave your keys in the vehicle.
- Take all valuables with you, do not leave them on the seat. If you are unable to take
the items with you, lock them in the trunk.
- When parking your car at a public parking facility, remember to only leave your ignition
key with the attendant.
- Never leave extra keys hidden in your car. Do not use magnetic boxes designed to hide a
set of keys in. Thieves know all about them.
- Never leave you car unlocked.
- If you must park on the street for the night, try to park in a well lit area and as near
to your front door as possible.
