Alarm Ordinance
and Permit Information
In January 2000, the City Council
adopted several changes to the City of Keller Alarm Ordinance. This ordinance
requires you to do several things if you have an alarm on your house or business that is
intended to summon police or fire personnel.
Among other things, you
are required to:
- Apply for one-time permit for your alarm system. This can be done by calling the Keller
Police Department Records Division at 817-743-4510 or visiting us at 330 Rufe
Snow. Permits are $50 and are good for the life of the system (unless the owner changes).
- Maintain your alarmed house or business in a manner that assures proper operation of the
alarm system.
- Maintain your alarm system in a manner that will minimize false alarm notification.
- Have someone available to respond to repair the alarm system or give us access to your
house or business if we need to get inside to secure the building.
- Refrain from activating the alarm system unless there is an emergency requiring police
or fire personnel.
- Notify the police Records section if you
change alarm companies, telephone numbers, key holder information,
or emergency contact information
Keep a set of written instructions for your alarm system at the alarmed site.
The City of Keller Alarm Ordinance also prohibits certain activities,
including:
- Allowing your alarm system to emit an audible signal for more than 30 minutes or
repeatedly emit an audible signal unless the system is a health, panic, or fire alarm is a
violation of the ordinance.
- Setting up your alarm system to automatically contact the police department directly is
prohibited.
After the fifth false alarm, the Keller Police Department will normally
send you a letter detailing the problem and warning you that future false alarms may
result in citations being issued or a cessation of police response to your alarmed site.
If your alarmed site continues to have false alarms after that, you may receive a
citation for violating the City of Keller Alarm Systems Ordinance. The minimum fine
is $50 for EACH false alarm thereafter.
If you or your system are causing excessive false alarms, we recommend
the following:
- Teach each resident or employee at your alarmed site how to properly operate the alarm
system. Each resident or employee should know the access code provided by the alarm
company.
- Designate someone to be at the residence or business when workers or vendors are
scheduled to be there. DO NOT provide workers or vendors with alarm information
unless your alarm company has a provision for "temporary" access.
- Ask your alarm company to call you BEFORE sending false alarm information to the police
department.
- Have your alarm system regularly inspected for breaks, poor connections, or other
defects.
- Have any defects in your system repaired immediately.
The Keller Police Department is here to serve you, but we must work
together. We applaud our citizens efforts to secure their property by using an
alarm system; however, false alarms consume hundreds of man-hours each year time
that could be better spent providing security and service in other areas. We ask
that you take good care of your system and help us to reduce the number of false
alarms
we receive.
